Obituary for Richard J. Broderick

BEVERLY- Richard J. Broderick, age 97 a lifelong resident of Beverly, passed away Thursday afternoon, September 20, 2018 surrounded by family at the Ledgewood Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Beverly. He was the beloved husband of the late Mildred R. (Carter) Broderick. Born in Beverly, he was the son of the late David Broderick and Winifred (McDonough) Broderick.
Richard was a graduate of Beverly High School and St. Mary's School in Beverly. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Boston University in 1947.
Richard was a Word War II veteran having served in the Coast Guard. He was stationed on the East Coast protecting harbors from the Canadian border to Virginia. His service included an encounter with a German UBoat off of the coast of Rhode Island during the height of the war. During his military service he met and married "Mil" on July 4th 1944 and raised 4 children in their home in Beverly. Richard’s career included managing various businesses mainly in New England but some as far-reaching as California. His roles in these firms included Chairman, President, Vice President, CFO, Controller, Director and sometimes as he would describe it "Chief Cook and Bottle Washer". He was also heavily involved in several community related charitable organizations.
A religious man, he was very involved in the creation of the St. John the Evangelist Parish and was one of the original founders. In his busy professional and personal life he made time almost every day to attend Mass no matter where he was.
He and Mil travelled the world both on business and personal trips including Ireland, Russia, and many places in Europe, Australia, South America and Japan, not to mention extensive trips throughout the United States.
Surviving him are his four children Judith A. Lane and her husband Hank of Hollis NH, Philip M. Broderick and his wife Jo of Middleton, MA, Kenneth R. Broderick and his wife Frances of Beverly, MA and Kathleen R. Davis and her husband Chip of Lunenburg, MA, sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, two brothers David C. Broderick of Beverly and Robert Broderick and his wife Anne of Huntley, IL. He was also the brother of the late Mary Lou Roberts, Donald Broderick and Paul Broderick.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, 111 New Balch Street, Beverly on Wednesday September 26 at 10 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will be held at St. Mary's' Cemetery, Beverly. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday September 25, 2018 from 4pm to 7pm at the Campbell's Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street Beverly. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association 2451 Crystal Drive, Suite 900
