Obituary for Peter N. Drinkwater

Beverly Farms - Peter Nicholas Drinkwater, age 79, passed away peacefully from Alzheimer’s disease with his beloved wife Georgia by his side on September 28, 2018.
Peter was the son of the late George F. and Anna Lawler Drinkwater and was born and brought up on Haskell Street in Beverly Farms. He was the youngest of nine children-Ginny, Suzy, Ralph, Dolly, Barbie, Johnny, Bobby and Scoop. He grew up and loved playing baseball at Dix Park, swimming and diving off of the pier at West Beach and attending all of the great Beverly Farms traditional events as a child, through adulthood with his children, and then grandchildren. Peter attended the Farms School and graduated with the class of 1956 from Beverly High and Cooperative trade schools. He went on to work for the United Shoe Machinery Corporation which employed 9,000 people and produced 85% of all shoe making machines in the United States. He spent his entire career at "The Shoe” working through mergers with Emhart Corporation and Black and Decker. After 40 years, he retired as the Manager of Manufacturing for Black and Decker in 2002.
Peter was married to Georgia Bunk Drinkwater for fifty seven years and had three wonderful children; Wendy, Patti and Peter. He was active in his community and coached Little League, was a member of the Centerville Improvement Society, Quarter Century Club and the Italian Community Center. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Georgia and spending many sunny days on West Beach with family and old friends. He helped teach his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Laurel, Caroline and Parker many things, including swimming and diving, often rating them in dive competitions. He taught them how to play poker and dig clams at the "Old Mill" as he did as a boy. They loved how “Puppy” meticulously marked their heights on a wall over the years with a pencil and a ruler to see who was taller, often racing into his house to see who grew the most. Handy and seemingly able to fix anything, he spent much of his time helping all of his children with their newly purchased homes and never missed a game, a play, a ballet recital, graduation or any milestone event for his children or grandchildren. Most recently, he was extremely proud to attend his granddaughter Laurel Edington’s medical school “white coat ceremony” marking her ambition to become a doctor. Peter was proud of his family and all of their many endeavors and accomplishments.
Peter leaves his devoted wife Georgia, his daughters, Wendy Drinkwater, Patti Edington and son in law, Stephen Edington, a son Peter N. Drinkwater, Jr., and partner Abbie Bruett, his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Caroline Stankus, Laurel and Parker Edington, his brother, Ralph “Rip” Drinkwater, the loving Bunk family and many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins.
His funeral service will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Friday, October 5, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial in the Beverly Farms Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions would be gratefully accepted by: The Beverly Farms Improvement Society, c/o Liz Falzone, 13 Old Coach Road, North Reading, MA 01864 or The Spectrum Adult Day Health Program, 600 Cummings Center, Beverly, MA 01915.
