Obituary for Neil B. Olson

Beverly- Neil Bradford Olson, age 88, beloved husband of Rose (Papazoglos) Olson, died Wednesday December 13, 2017 at Beverly Hospital. He was born in Boston to the late Lester V. and Janette Ruth (Hall) Olson. A graduate of Simmons College and Tufts University, he was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Marines, serving in both World War II and Korea.

Neil was the director of Libraries of Salem State College for 30 years, and was a Trustee of Beverly Public library for 40 years. He was a member of the John Holmes poetry workshop in Cambridge, MA in the 1950s. His acquaintances included Maxine Kumin and Donald Hall. Neil published several chapbooks of poetry over his life, including “Death of a War Dog,” the title poem of which appeared in The Atlantic Monthly. He was a beloved member of his community, coaching Little League for a dozen years.

Surviving him, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Cameron Olson and his wife Marcia Gallo Olson of Beverly, Neil Byron Olson and his wife Caroline E. Sutton of Manhattan, Bradford Olson and his wife Laura A. Olson of Brooklyn, and two grandchildren, Bradford Gallo Olson and his wife Dalia, and Elizabeth Cameron Olson. He was predeceased by his brother Ronald Streeter and his sister Linda Marilyn Olson McDonald.

Neil’s funeral service will be held at Beverly Public Library, 32 Essex Street, Beverly, MA on Sunday January 7, 2018 at 2 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA 01915.
