Obituary for Matthew Peter Donoghue

Matthew Peter Donoghue, 54, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, October 10th. Son of the late Bernadette M. (O’Donnell) and Edmund F. Donoghue, he was born in Framingham, MA, grew up in Manchester-by-the-Sea, attended Bridgewater State University, and worked for many years in Washington D.C and New York City.

He loved the Boston Bruins, theater, and fierce political debates, astounding all with his depth and breadth of knowledge. Bobby Orr epitomized all Matthew wanted to be when he was young, but even then, physical challenges precluded. Active in Massachusetts’ politics during college, he shifted his focus to the national arena and was proud of his years of public service to the Clinton-Gore administration Department of Energy where he honed his incisive writing style, particularly his involvement in Gore’s rivers and streams rejuvenation program and the Cassini Mission to Saturn. He remained politically active using his oratory and writing skills to advocate for the marginalized and to push for healthcare rights. Musical theater was his greatest passion and included performance, stage managing, and production. He worked in theater public relations in New York City for years, cultivating lasting friendships. Recurrent health challenges intervened, yet he never stopped dreaming of and planning his return to the bright lights of NYC.

He is survived by his siblings: John Donoghue of Tewksbury, Ann Fuhrman and her husband James of Bellingham, Eileen Shaughnessy and her husband Michael of Clayton, GA, Mary Lilley and her husband Stephen of Woodbridge, CT, and Andrew Donoghue and his wife Lihui Long of Berlin; nephews and nieces: Bridget, Kyle, Christopher, Michael, Brian, John, Colleen, Sean, Ian, Brenna, Arianne, Rachel, and Michelle; grandnephew: Frankie, and grandnieces: Brittany and Mae, as well as many other extended family relatives.

Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Parish, 62 School Street, Manchester, on Monday, October 16th at 10:00 A.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Manchester. Visiting hours will be at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly on Sunday from 12 to 3 pm.
