Obituary for Mary Agnes Mendonca

Wenham - Mary Agnes (Connelly) Mendonca 74, beloved wife of 51 years to Paul E. Mendonca, loving mother of Kelly and Jason, Grandmother to Ethan, Eleanor and another grandson on the way, died peacefully on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at Beverly Hospital. She was surrounded by family and she left the world with the same quiet grace that she inhabited it.
Born, raised and educated in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Francis J. and Anna (O’Sullivan) Connelly.
Mary dedicated her career to teaching. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Framingham State College, and a Master’s Degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge.
Those who knew Mary knew that she preferred to let others take the spotlight, while she supported, and organized in the background.
Mary was a careful and compassionate listener, a democratic mediator, and many family and friends sought her counsel.
As a dedicated teacher living in a small town, she always answered her phone, even if it was the middle of the night. If you needed help, she would be there without hesitation. Mary was a homemaker and gardener, generous with her gifts. There was always a place at her table for out-of-town strays. Mary believed that everyone loved getting cards, so she sent them for every holiday.
Mary loved her family, she loved her community and she loved music. She will be dearly missed by her family including Paul, Kelly, Jason, daughter-in-law, Brett, as well as two sisters, Anne Flynn and her husband, Joe of Arlington and Janet Burt and her husband, Arthur of Wenham, a brother, Francis W. Connelly and his wife, Eva of Cambridge, a brother-in-law, David Larsen of Woburn and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Dorothy Larsen.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, 12 Park Street, Topsfield, Friday, August 3, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with a collation to follow. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and to participate in a celebration of Mary’s life. Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Contributions may be made in her memory to the Wenham Council on Aging, 138 Main Street, Wenham, MA 01984, Accord Food Pantry, 69 Willow St., So.
