Obituary for Marion K. Dempsey

Marion Katherine (O’Brien) Dempsey, 85, of Hamilton, died Tuesday October 3, 2017 at Kaplan Family Hospice House, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Beverly she was the daughter of William N. O’Brien and Nora Ann (King) O’Brien. Marion grew up in Hamilton where she attended Hamilton-Wenham schools. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Beverly in 1950. She continued her education at the Beverly Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1953 as a Registered Nurse. She worked in the operating room at Beverly Hospital for many years and was a private duty nurse in several North Shore hospitals and private homes.
Marion is survived by her husband Russell Dempsey, with whom she shared 62 years. Marion and Russ enjoyed traveling, visiting Ireland, Germany, France, Alaska and many other countries together. Marion, a dedicated member of the church and God, was a Communicant of St. Paul’s Parish Church in Hamilton and Eucharistic minister. She belonged to the Alter Society and was a member of the Ladies Sodality. She was also a member of Beverly Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae where she received an Honorary Member Award in 2009. She had a passion for flower and vegetable gardening. Marion loved swimming, bowling and has made many beautiful quilts, afghans and sweaters for friends and family alike. In later years she enjoyed playing Bridge with friends and being with family and grandchildren. She was a very giving person with a bright spirit, and will be dearly missed by all.
Marion is also survived by her loving children, William Dempsey and his wife Kathleen of Foxboro, Robert Dempsey and his fiancé Barbara of Danvers, and daughter Elizabeth Coyne and her husband Matthew of Beverly, two grandchildren, James Dempsey and his wife Kristyn, of Washington DC and Griffin Coyne of Beverly. She is predeceased by her brother William O’Brien of Tucson, Arizona, and her daughter-in-law Kathleen E. Dempsey.
The family would also like to thank the staff at Riverbend, Ipswich where Marion has resided for the last year and the Kaplan House staff for making her transition as peaceful as possible.
Her Funeral Mass will be held at the Church of St. Paul, Hamilton on Thursday, October 19th at 9:00AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial at Hamilton Cemetery, Hamilton. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly on Wednesday, October 18th from 4-7 PM.
