Obituary for Joseph S. Jedrey

Beverly Farms- Mr. Joseph S. Jedrey, 90, devoted husband of Ruth Sullivan Jedrey, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage, died Monday morning.

Born in 1928 and raised in Lynn, he was the only child of the late George and Vinetta (Hill-Devine) Jedrey. During his early years his family lived on Leighton Street in Lynn. His father operated a First National on the corner of Washington and Henry Streets, where Joe helped in the shop and made deliveries in the neighborhood. In his youth his parents took him to Nova Scotia to visit Arcadian relatives. He attended St. Mary’s High School in Lynn where he skated for the boys hockey team and graduated in 1946.

After graduating from St. Mary’s, he and his friend Nellie signed up for the Navy, where he spent two years. Once he returned home he entered the General Electric Apprentice Program which led to his 39 year career with General Electric. While working in Building 64 he met his future wife Ruth Sullivan. They married at the Thompson Club in Nahant and built a new house on Dyer Road in Beverly Farms adjacent to the homes of Ruth’s sister Anna and her husband Roger Nihan and her brother Jim and his wife Norma Sullivan. They lived in this home ever since, raising five children. Joe taught his children to ski and took his daughter Leslie and Billy to climb Tuckerman’s Ravine and ski down, an adventure they will forever cherish. He made many lasting memories taking his family hiking in the White Mountains, cooking breakfasts on his grille at West Beach, taking annual vacations to Lovell Lake in New Hampshire and coaching his son Bill’s baseball team. He was an active member of St. Margaret’s Parish and enjoyed many happy moments with his friends and neighbors on Dyer and Adeline Roads. For many years Joe contributed his time and talent to the Beverly Farms 4th of July Committee and was Chairman of the Committee during the Bicentennial celebration.

He was a lifelong member of the Gannon golf club in Lynn where he spent many a weekend golfing with friends and classmates from Lynn and enjoyed playing with his brother-in-law Leo Sullivan.

Joe learned the piano as a child and played all of his life. While his children were young he was a member of “The Insiders” playing gigs all over the North Shore. In more recent years he was a member of a group who playfully named their band “Still Vertical”.

He was dedicated to all of his grandchildren who called him “Dampa”. He frequently attended their sports games and was a volunteer golf coach at Salem High while his grandson Ben Hayden played there. All the grandchildren loved Dampa and considered his house their second home.

In addition to his wife Ruth, he is survived by a son, Bill Jedrey of Beverly and his partner Debbie Fatello; four daughters, Leslie Jedrey and her husband Larry Johnson of Wilmington, North Carolina. Kathy Hayden and her husband, Tom, of Salem, Susan Jedrey and her husband, Guy Lewis, of Fairfax, Virginia and Beth Gamble and her husband, Craig, of Rochester New York; 5 grandchildren, Ben Hayden of Aspen, Colorado, Anna Hayden of Salem, and Daniel, Helen and Katherine Lewis of Fairfax, Virginia. He leaves his brothers-in-law Leo Sullivan, and wife Carole, of Lynn, Richard Sullivan and wife, Judy, of Marshfield, Tom Sullivan, and wife Pat, of Swampscott, Father Bill Sullivan of Bristol, RI and Eddie Sullivan of Hilton Head, SC. Joe will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
