Obituary for John J. Malone

Beverly – John J. Malone III, 71, beloved husband of Christine M. (Pia) Malone, died Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at home surrounded by his family.

Raised and educated in Wakefield, he was the son of the late John J. Jr. and Aline T. (Lareau) Malone. He graduated from Wakefield High School, class of 1965. He continued his education at Salem State College and earned a Master’s Degree in criminal justice from Western New England University.

John fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a Massachusetts State Trooper, graduating with the 57th Training Troop in 1973. After a decorated thirty-year career, he retired in 2003 at the rank of Detective Lieutenant and was commanding officer of the Essex County District Attorney’s Detective Unit.

John enjoyed golf and was a member of Beverly Golf and Tennis Club, he could be found skiing most weekends at Loon Mountain and on several occasions in Colorado, and spent summer days at his beloved West Beach in Beverly. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and colleague who will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, with whom he recently celebrated twenty-five years of marriage, he is survived by two sons, Sean Malone of Beverly and Tim Malone and his wife, Julie of Boston, and two grandchildren, Lilah and Breck Malone, his sister, Judith Malone and her husband, Steve Kidder of Belmont and their children, Steve Kidder and his wife, Keirsa Johnson, Julia Kidder and her husband, Charles Kulwin and Elizabeth Kidder and her husband, Matthew Gallagher, his father and mother-in-law, John and Nancy Pia of Beverly, his brothers-in-law, David Pia of Boston and Stephen Pia and his wife, Kelli of Laconia, NH and their children, Alexandra and Jacquelyn, special and extended family, Marc and Laura Smorczewski and his former wife, Marilyn Orthman of Peabody.

His funeral service will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 12 noon. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Contributions may be made in John’s memory to Sweet Paws Rescue, PO Box 752, Essex, MA 01929 in honor of John’s beloved lab, Jameson.
