Obituary for Janet L. Williams

Beverly - Janet L. Williams 66, formerly of Gloucester, died of heart failure on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington.
Born in Newington, CT on October 13th, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Howard V. and Margaret “Margot” (Goldsmith) Williams. Janet spent most of her childhood growing up in New Britain, CT with summers fondly spent at her family’s summer home on Lake Wappaquasset in Woodstock, CT. In 1967, her family relocated to West Gloucester when her father purchased the historic William Haskell house on Lincoln Street in the Walker Creek neighborhood. After graduating from Gloucester High School in 1969, she continued her education at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. Following graduation, Janet moved to Boston and was employed by the US Postal Service for over a decade. During this time she married Herbert Neuhaus, PhD and eventually moved to Illinois, residing in Naperville and Wheaton over a number of years before returning to the East Coast to live permanently. Her marriage to Dr. Neuhaus ended in divorce.
In 1996 Janet moved back to her family’s home in West Gloucester to help care for her aging parents. It was at this time she became a parishioner at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Gloucester --- a community that would become her foundation and family for the remainder of her life. She assumed many roles within the church----artist, Clerk of the Vestry, Altar Guild coordinator, active member of the Sunday Forum, and spokesperson for justice. Among her fellow parishioners, Janet was known as a woman of wit, candor, engaging curiosity, open-mindedness, and deep faith.
A gifted seamstress, she also excelled at quilt-making and other textile crafts. She loved reading and never lost her desire to keep learning. But it was Janet’s deep love of animals that defined much of her character her entire life. She was never without the companionship of a furry loved one.
She is survived by her brother, David Williams and his wife, Marta of Austin, TX. She was also the sister of the late Allen Williams of Newmarket, NH.
Her memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 48 Middle Street, Gloucester, Monday, October 15, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly. Information, directions, condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com.
