Obituary for Ernest A. Yanakakis

Rowley - Ernest A. Yanakakis, 91 passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday March 6th surrounded by his family. He was born to Kleo & Apostolis Yanakakis on May 11, 1927 in Lynn.

He was educated in Lynn graduating from Classical High School. Having lost his father early in his life and his brothers being called to war he stayed home to care for his mother and sisters running a business while finishing high school. His thirst for knowledge was lifelong and he was well read on many topics. Ernest and his brothers opened and operated the Franklin Fruit Company, Franklin Supermarkets and the Meadows Liquors of Lynn Mass for many years.

The Yanakakis family played a key role in supporting and growing Saint George Greek Orthodox Church as well as the Greek community. He was a founding force of alpine skiing on the East Coast and one of the charter members of the Lynn Snow Chasers. He lived life to the fullest and never settled for a job half done, his work ethic and energy were infectious as was his wry smile. He was a man of many talents and his love of athletics was passed on to his children and grandchildren. He ran road races, played competitive golf, won countless ski races, was a painter, a carpenter, a gardener and a genuine “jack of all trades”. His stories and adventures of hiking and skiing Tuckerman’s Ravine and other peaks around the world were legendary. He had the special gift to make friends wherever he went and will be missed by all who knew him.

Ernest is survived by his children Heide Holmes of Newburyport, Kristine Smiley McKechnie and her husband Jim McKechnie of Rowley, William Yanakakis and his wife Paula of Ipswich and Peter Yanakakis of Natick. A sister, Mary Yanakakis of Lynn and his grandchildren, Samantha Smiley, Curtis Smiley, Casey Holmes, Chris Yanakakis, Ben Yanakakis, Alex Yanakakis, Lindsay Yanakakis and Corey Yanakakis as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Monika and his son John.
