Obituary for Edward J. Keenan

BEVERLY - Edward J. Keenan passed away surrounded by his family Wednesday afternoon, February 28, 2018, at the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Nursing Center in Bedford, Mass. Edward and his loving late wife Louis S. (Pizzo) Keenan were married for 62 years. He was the son of the late Edward J. and Mary J. (Vargas) Keenan and was raised and educated in East Boston.

A proud and honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Keenan served as an airplane gunner and received numerous commendations and medals of honor.

Mr. Keenan had been employed as the operational manager of the Boston and Lockport Block Company of East Boston until it's closing in the late 70s. From there he moved on to become the regional sales manager for the Plymouth Rock Trucking Company until his retirement.

Edward and his late wife Louise were lifetime worshipers at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church in Beverly. He was an active member of the Vittori-Rocci Post in Beverly and volunteered countless hours as a member of the Honor Guard for his fallen post members. Ed was also a member of the VFW in Beverly and the Hamilton-Wenham Gun Club. Mr. Keenan was truly devoted to his wife Louise, he enjoyed traveling with her to Foxwoods Casino, Italy, and Florida, and ballroom dancing with her at the Wonderland Ballroom. Edward was extremely hardworking and enjoyed being a handyman around his home. He was an avid card player, who looked forward to meeting his friends monthly for a game. Mr. Keenan was legendary for his sharp wit and conversation with anybody and anyone. When he first moved to Beverly, he was a volunteer fireman for the city.

He leaves four children, Terrie Keenan and her son Albert Coles of Mill Valley, Calif., Karen Keenan Takis and her husband Anthony Takis and their children, Matthew and Rachael Takis of Ipswich, Edward Keenan and his wife Susan Navarro and their children, Amanda and John of Beverly and David Keenan and his wife Lisa and their children, Calvin Martel, Carly and Dawson Keenan of Beverly, one brother, Eugene Keenan and his wife Margie of Byfield, two sisters-in-law, Shirley and Jim Brown of Sarasota, Fla., and Linda Kleimola of North Andover, Elizabeth Cempellin of Beverly; along with many nieces and nephews. He also is predeceased by his brother-in-law Anthony Pizzo and Mary Cempellin.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot Street, Beverly, on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Beverly. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Edward's memory to the Bedford VA Hospital, 200 Springs Road, Bedford, MA 01730, or to St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Beverly.
