Obituary for Constance Holak

Constance A. (Hoy) Holak, age 92, died Monday, February 05, 2018 at CareOne, Essex Park in Beverly after a long illness. She was predeceased by her husband Edward T. Holak with whom she shared 59 years of marriage.

Born and raised in Beverly, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Egan) Hoy. She was proud of her heritage as an 11th generation descendant of Edward Spaulding and 14th generation descendant of Roger Conant. She was born at home on August 17, 1925 and had the unique opportunity to grow up and then raise her own children in the same family homestead where she resided for 89 years.

She was a graduate of Saint Mary’s Girls High School in Beverly, Class of 1943 and continued her education at the Fay Secretarial School in Boston. She worked as a stenographer at the United Shoe Machinery Corporation before she married. While her family was young, she was a lunchroom and playground monitor at the Upton Elementary School where former students, now grown, remember her fondly. She was also a CYO Advisor at St. Alphonsus Church in Danvers and a CCD volunteer for the parish for many years. In 1978, she returned to the workforce as a secretary at Catholic Charities, Peabody where she worked for nearly 15 years. She was beloved by the administrative and social work staff at the agency where she and her husband Ed were always included in their special activities and events.

Above all else, Connie was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother with a strong devotion to her Catholic faith, which she demonstrated through countless selfless acts of kindness and strong involvement in parish life. She loved the beach, camping, gardening, her dogs, Buffy and Joshua, her life long “club” of girl friends and creating special moments for all of her grandchildren. She made friends wherever she went including at the Liberty Tree Mall where she earned the reputation of being the fastest of all the other mall walkers. After her retirement she enjoyed traveling with her husband on bus trips to Niagara Falls, Atlantic City and Foxwoods. Her family, friends and caregivers from Comfort Keepers and Essex Park will always remember her twinkling blue eyes and loving smile.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas E. Holak and his wife Judith, Peter J. Holak both of Beverly; three daughters, MaryAnn Holak of Beverly, Kathryn L. Missett and husband James of Lowell and Elizabeth J. O’Neill and husband Thomas of Reading; eleven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Thomas S., Edward F. and Robert J. Hoy, Mary W. Chisholm, Elizabeth L. Butterworth, Dorothy Le Duc and Elinor J. Hoy. She is also survived by her sister in law Helen McGrane of Salem, and many nieces and nephews.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11a.m. in St John the Evangelist Church, 111 New Balch St, Beverly. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday in the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly from 4-7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Beverly Council on Aging, 90 Colon Street, Beverly, MA 01915 or Catholic Charities North, Basic Needs, 280 Washington Street, Salem, MA 01970.
