Obituary for Augustus J. Gomes, Sr.

Beverly – Augustus J. “Gus” Gomes 91, beloved husband of the late Idalia S. (Ferreira) Gomes, died Friday, October 13, 2017 surrounded by family.

Born and raised in Peabody, he was the son of the late Augusto P. and Alzira B. (Pinto) Gomes. He graduated from Peabody High School and earned his Associates degree from Salem Commercial College in Salem.

An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army where he was the recipient of the Bronze Star for his service.
Mr. Gomes owned and operated the former Colonial Café on Church Street in Salem for many years. Prior to that, he worked in the leather industry and as a farmer in Michigan. For fifteen years he worked at Star Market in Lynn until the time of his retirement.

An avid sportsman, as a young man, Gus played on a local soccer team. He was a longtime New England Patriots season ticket holder as well. He enjoyed bowling, swimming, fishing, boating and golfing where he had two holes in one, He was also an avid gardener and had a love for dogs and music and enjoyed playing his tonette.

A longtime resident of Beverly, he was a member of the Vittori Rocci Post, the Portuguese American Veterans, the CLC Club in Peabody, the Beverly-Salem Elks and the American Legion Spear Post in Beverly. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving him are three daughters, Susan King and her husband, Roger of Beverly, Maria Kuhl and her husband, Lester of Hampstead, NH and Erin Emery of Fremont, NH, two sons, James Gomes and his wife, Dina of Beverly and Augustus “Gus” Gomes and his wife, Karen of Beverly, ten grandchildren, Alicia and her husband, Brent, Jay and his wife, Lauren, George and his wife, Brittany, Janelle, Jessica, Heather, Eric, Evan, Alicia and Nathan, seven great grandchildren, Annabelle, Fiona, Aubrey, Kai, Nicholas, Zachariah and Brooke and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Gerald Gomes.

His funeral service will be held in the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Contributions may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.
