Obituary for Armand L. Fortunato

Beverly - Armand L. Fortunato 91, beloved husband of Florence M. (Pinciaro) Fortunato with whom he shared sixty four years of marriage, died Thursday, August 02, 2018. He was the son of the late Donato and Angela (Della Monica) Fortunato. Armand was born in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School where he served as student council president and president of his junior year class. He was elected by the members of the Beverly High School Class of 1945 as “The one who did the most for BHS.” Armand graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies, a Master’s Degree in Guidance and a certificate on advance study in the field of educational administration and supervision. He also studied at Boston University and Salem State College.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during the Korean Conflict as a member of the United States Army.
Armand was a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent of the Beverly Public Schools for thirty three years. He began his career in education as a middle school teacher-coach at Bridgton, Maine and retired in 1987 as principal of the St. John’s School in Beverly.
An active parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church, he served as a parish council member, Eucharistic minister and lector.
Active in the community, he was a member of Kiwanis, Project RAP and the North Shore Heart Association. He was a Beverly Hospital corporator, Vittori-Rocci Post chairman and member for sixty five years and president of the Beverly Retired Teachers Association.
Armand was a recipient of the Beverly YMCA’s Service to Youth Award and the Beverly Football Booster’s Award for thirty years of service to Beverly’s youth. A stone marker and plaque was dedicated at the McKeown School flagpole honoring Peter, Stephen and Armand Fortunato for eighty years of service to the Beverly Public School system and the community. He was also awarded the St. John the Evangelist School’s fifth annual school honoree at the annual Legacy Gala.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Jo-Ann Fortunato and Thomas and Linda Fortunato all of Beverly. Also grandchildren, Nicole and her fiancé, Matthew Mahan and Michael and his girlfriend, Brianna Tamburino. He leaves a sister, Annette DiVincenzo and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of the late Anna Femino, Joseph, Stephen, Peter and Mario Fortunato and Eugenia Witwicki.
Armand’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the staff at Care One at Essex Park and Care Dimensions.
His funeral will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Monday, August 6, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service on Monday morning from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly. Contributions may be made in his memory to Pauline DiVincenzo Woodbury Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Beverly High School, Attn: Niles Flanders, 100 Sohier Road, Beverly, MA 01915.
